The Kanuri tribe live in Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroun. In the 16th century they come together into a great state at the Sudanese terminus of the major trans-Saharan trade route through the Bilma oasis to Libya. This empire is known as Kanem of Bornu. The Kanuri have been Muslims since the 11th century and practice the Malikite code of Islamic law. They trade with the Shuwa Arab and Fulani and were known for their peanut agriculture. Read more

Maiduguri based singer, so popular in the late colonial period & to some extent in to the Post independent Nigeria Borno era.
Blessed with a golden voice such that people listen to her even if they do not understand the Kanuri Language. Music experts named her as the Last Diva of the Sahara Desert.
